Philo is Launching a 100% Free Streaming Service With a Free DVR | Cord Cutters News (2024)

Today, Philo, the live TV streaming service, announced that it will be raising its price but adding AMC Plus on June 12, 2024. With this change customers will see its price increase from $25 to $28 a month on all new subscribers.

With this news Philo also announced that it is launching a 100% free streaming service. To help it stand out from other free services Philo will offer 70+ channels and most of them will be able to be DVRed for free. No credit card needed to use this new free service and DVR.

“Another way we have been working to bring more value to our subscribers is by expanding the catalog of free channels we offer as part of Philo. We currently have a curated selection of 70+ free channels — from reality to music, news to classic TV — with more to be added over time. What’s new is that users will now be able to sign up to watch and record a majority of free channels without being a Core subscriber or providing a credit card. Whether someone’s not ready to make the jump to Core or is simply taking a break, we still want to provide them with a wide selection of great shows and movies.” Philo said in a statement on its website.

Current subscribers will be able to keep their current package, but you won’t get AMC+ unless you agree to the new $28 core package. This gives the current subscribers the option to access the AMC+ subscription service if they want to pay extra. Current subscribers, if they don’t wish to upgrade, will keep their current package at the current price. After June 12, 2024 all new subscribers will be billed $28 a month with AMC+ included.

Here is the letter sent to subscribers today:

Dear Philo Community,

At Philo, our mission is to build a TV experience people love and be an amazing value for our subscribers. A big part of that is doing everything we can to keep Philo as affordable as possible for our subscribers and not raising prices for them after they subscribe. Still, the costs of content and the services we rely on to operate Philo do rise over time, and starting on June 12th, the price of our Core package will increase from $25 to $28 per month for new and returning subscribers.

We’re proud to say that this is only the second time in the seven-and-a-half years since we launched that we have raised our price. We have a philosophy at Philo that when we raise the price, we should also offer more value to our subscribers at the same time. Last time, we extended our unlimited DVR from 30 days to a year, and this time we’re happy to announce that going forward AMC+ will be included as part of our new Core package.

Like the previous time we raised our price, we didn’t want our existing subscribers to feel forced into a price increase. That remains true — current subscribers will be able to keep their current package and price. In fact, anyone who joined Philo on the first day of our launch in 2017, and kept their subscription active, is still paying the same price today.

Another way we have been working to bring more value to our subscribers is by expanding the catalog of free channels we offer as part of Philo. Whether someone’s not ready to make the jump to Core or is simply taking a break, we still want to provide them with a wide selection of great shows and movies.

We’re always listening to our subscribers to find ways we can make Philo better. With tons of high-quality free shows, beloved must-watch channels, and premium add-ons, we’re dedicated to making Philo the best destination for TV entertainment. If you’d like to learn more, there are details about all the new updates below.

And as always, thanks for being a part of the Philo community.
